Interior designer Janice Viekman may not have one specific style—her abilities transcend genres—but amidst this eclecticism she has created a unique niche in Seattle design. Whether contemporary or classic, she seeks out a certain serenity for each of her projects, one that speaks to our way of life in the Emerald City. Viekman has always believed in the importance of sanctuaries in this technological age—the need for urbanites to have a calming, peaceful place to call home. And while this 2004 Design Achievement Award winner also works on commercial projects (the Sea-Tac International Airport is one of the more prominent ones), it is her approach to residential designs that’s helping Seattleites find refuge from the world that lies outside their front doors.
Janice Viekman’s Five Steps to a Serene Interior:
1. Limit the color and material palette to create a more expansive, soothing scheme.
2. For visual interest, vary texture and pattern throughout the house.
3. Instead of putting everything you own out at once, rotate art and decorative objects.
4. Consider senses beyond sight. The right aromas and sounds—a scented floral arrangement or a soothing water source—can add serenity.
5. Incorporate peace and quiet. Utilize sound-absorbing items such as upholstered furniture, rugs and carpets, and even soft pillows and bedding.
