Prints Charming
Everywhere we look this season, we’re seeing prints. Not the zebra and leopard patterns you might imagine but beautiful screen prints, and we’re willing to bet there’s much more to come.

When art-world impresario Andy Warhol launched his photo-stencil screen prints of Marilyn Monroe in 1962, the age-old medium captured the public’s imagination.

A decade earlier in Finland, Marimekko founder Armi Ratia was making a splash working with young artists to produce screen-printed textiles with motifs rooted in nature and bold symbols related to world events. Today the independent online crafters’ emporium Etsy.com offers more than 13,000 screen-printed items. The ubiquitous graphic T-shirt lives ever large, though screen prints are also turning up on cork, rubber, porcelain, glass and wood. While our forecasts don’t come with a guarantee, our crystal ball might carry a screen print if designers could tackle a curve. Seattle stores are currently featuring the popular screen-printed soft goods and limited-edition balsa prints of Ross Menuez for Areaware and gorgeous organic bedding by Amenity Home. We predict that screen-printed coffee tables and cabinet facades are also on their way.
